　　深夜的穆赫蘭道發生一樁車禍，女子麗塔（勞拉·赫利 Laura Harring 飾）在車禍中失了憶。她跌跌撞撞來到一個公寓里藏身。
　　一名男子說他常常夢見一個叫雲奇的地方，那里有個惡魔盯著他。於是就來到雲奇，果真見到墻後有怪物出現，男子當場暈死。
　　另有一名殺手殺死了他面前 的男人，然而蹩腳的他卻惹來了不少一連串的麻煩。
　　故事回到一個剛到好萊塢“尋夢”的女子貝蒂（娜奧米·沃茨 Naomi Watts 飾），她的姨父姨母在電影圈有廣泛人緣，讓貝蒂的發展如虎添翼，試鏡大受好評。同時，她所住的公寓，正好是麗塔藏身之地。貝蒂收留了麗塔，二人感情融洽。面對記不起自己是誰的麗塔，貝蒂決定幫助她尋找回自己的記憶。
　　一名導演想自己決定新戲的女主角，卻被他人強行安排人選。工作不順意的他還發現妻子和清潔工睡在一起。
　　這些看似松散的事件，就像一個迷宮，引向一個讓人猜不透的世界……
