下一個時刻，柯爾特發現自己身處一個獨立的房間里，穿著自己的軍服。此時，一個名叫卡羅爾·古德溫的指揮官（維拉·法梅加 飾）向他解釋了這一切令人費解的事件。原來，柯爾特正在執行一項特殊任務，隸屬於一個名叫“源代碼”（Source Code）的政府實驗項目：利用一套儀器，他可以反覆“穿越”進一名在這起列車爆炸中遇害的死者身體里，但每次只能回到距離爆炸的8分鐘前。制造這起爆炸的兇手宣稱將於6小時後在芝加哥市中心制造下一次更大規模的恐怖事件，為了阻止上百萬人喪生，柯爾特不得不爭分奪秒，在“源代碼”中一次次“穿越”收集線索，在這爆炸前最後的“8分鐘”里尋找到元兇
