退役警察史賓賽（馬克華伯格飾）一心揭開一件聳人聽聞的謀殺案的真相及案件背後的複雜陰謀，卻因此被捲入波士頓犯罪世界最腐敗的核心。

這是沃爾伯格和導演彼得·博格自《孤獨的倖存者》《恐襲波士頓》《深海浩劫》《22英里》後第五度，合作基於羅伯特·B·派克所著同名小說，派克死後由Ace Atkins接手創作，也是以男主角Spenser為中心的八本系列懸疑小說中的一本。Netflix已經和派克遺產方面達成協議，基於Spenser這一角色打造一系列電影。
本片將有別於小說，小說講述Spenser從一個滿嘴俏皮話的拳擊手變為波士頓的一名私家偵探，電影從Spenser出獄開始講起，他被剝奪了私人偵探執照，當他揭露了一個聳人聽聞的謀殺案和背後陰謀的真相時，他又被拉回了波士頓的黑暗犯罪世界中。尼爾·莫瑞茲(《速度與激情》系列《越獄》)製片， Sean O"Keefe編寫劇本。
